The ill-fated Hindenburg as it cruised over Manhattan in 1936. Thousands of New Yorkers crowded the streets or peered out of windows to catch a glimpse of this technological marvel.  Dr. Hugo Eckener, Chairman of  Germany‘s Zeppelin Company (the company that built the Hindenburg) was opposed to displaying the swastika on the airship‘s tail…of course, Hitler prevailed. This would be one of the last peaceful encounters that America and Germany would have before the outbreak of war; the Hindenburg’s fiery devastation would be a harbinger of the near future.
