Screw Your “Sieg Heil,” Schicklgruber!

One man’s refusal to follow the crowd . . . The courage to say ‘No’

The famous photograph in which August Landmesser refused to salute. The photo was taken in Hamburg in 1936, during the celebrations for the launch of a ship. In the crowd, one person refuses to raise his arm to give the Nazi salute. The man was August Landmesser. After fathering children with a Jewish woman, he had been found guilty of “dishonoring the race” under Nazi racial laws and had come to oppose Hitler‘s regime. In February 1944 he was drafted into a penal unit, the 999th Fort Infantry Battalion, where he was declared missing in action and presumably killed.
